I have not had any luck with sewing my own pants/shorts and I was about to give up when I decided to give Apostrophy patterns a go. My shape is rectangular, my crotch curve is shallow, my rise is short (back especially) and I have a flat bum. I can find ready to wear pants that fit pretty good, but I tend to stick to low rise cuts and stretchy fabrics. And being able to try on before you buy is helpful in finding clothes that fit.
When making clothes for yourself it’s a bit trickier to find the right fit. And it’s so disheartening to spend time sewing only to be disappointed with the fit at the end. I have watched many pants fitting videos and ready many articles, but all seemed like so much work.
I love the approach taken with Apostorphe patterns, where you start with your measurements and then use a pattern that closely matches your shape. It makes adjusting afterwards so much simpler. And in my case, my muslin shorts - which I intended to wear as PJs - fit PERFECTLY. I have never had pants that fit me so well.
I highly recommend this pattern - between the fit and all the styling options you almost don’t need any other pants or shorts pattern. Watch the measuring video and carefully take your measurements. Join the Facebook Group for support and advice. Make a muslin to test your fit and then enjoy the best pants you can imagine.
I now intend to make all sorts of shorts and pants, in both woven and stretch fabrics. Next up: cropped, straight capris in a swishy, drapy fabric with a flat front and side pockets!
I was a little worried about this whole way of getting a pattern. But now, I find myself recommending it to others. I was having trouble fitting pants, but with this system, I came close, just needed a little tweaking. Success was easy.
